Tips for Solo Travel

Many people love to travel alone, as this offers you a level of freedom and independence, and Bangkok is an amazing city for the adventurous traveller. The challenge of exploring Bangkok on your own is rewarded with a unique experience that won’t cost you a fortune, and with that in mind, here are a few tips to help make your experience a memorable one.

Mass Transportation

Bangkok is home to Skytrain, an elevated rail system that covers most of the cities, and this is the cheapest way to get around Bangkok. Maps are freely available and aside from Skytrain, there is an extensive network of canals and riding on a long-tailed riverboat taxi will give you an insight into the lives of the local people. Buses are cheap but do not run to timetables, yet they do run to every corner of the city, although they are crowded during the rush hour. There are also lots of local taxis available, should you need them.

Jatuchak Weekend Market

This is the biggest weekend market you are ever likely to see; indeed, you could spend two days walking around and still haven’t seen it all. This is the ideal place to do your souvenir shopping and you won’t find a cheaper place, especially if you are good at bartering, which can save you even more. The market is located near Jatuchak Park, close to Bang Kapi and every taxi driver knows there it is, and this is the place to buy your souvenirs.

Accommodation

There are very affordable long-term hotels in Ekkamai, Bangkok that are ideal for solo travellers and an online search will bring up a list of places where you can stay for a reasonable price. Whether for a few weeks or a single night, Bangkok has hotels to suit every budget and if you choose one that is centrally located, getting around won’t be an issue.

Keep Your Valuables Safe

When travelling anywhere, it is important to keep your valuables in a safe place, especially when in crowded places, as every major city has its fair share of pickpockets. Generally speaking, Bangkok is a very safe place for tourists, although you should take care with your passport and cash wherever you happen to be.

If you are the adventurous type who likes to explore, you will love Bangkok and with so much to see and do, your stay will be a memorable one.
